Danish people, happiest people - World Values Survey (Photo: www.ambbeijing.um.dk)

The World Values Survey, an agency funded by the United States government has recently found out that Denmark is the happiest country in the world.

The researchers also found a significant increase in the level of happiness of the people in the entire planet. Of the 52 countries studied, 45 were found to be happier at present than in the past years.

Denmark is not the richest country, but it has a strong democracy, a peaceful environment, and a remarkable social equality which is rarely seen in most countries.

“Denmark is prosperous — not the richest country in the world but it is prosperous,” said Ronald Inglehart, a political scientist at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research and the leading figure of the WVS.

The survey proves that the wealth of a nation does not necessarily convert to the level of happiness of its people. An evidence of which is the absence of the United States in the top ten countries (16th) despite the fact that it is the richest in the world.

Ronald Inglehart also stated that he suspects a strong correlation between peace and happiness as well as democracy and happiness.

The other countries that rank high in the survey are Canada, Sweden, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Northern Ireland, the Netherlands, Iceland, Switzerland, and Ireland.

Zimbabwe, a country battered by political and social instability, is the least happy according to the WVS.

The World Values Survey is being spearheaded by social scientists to evaluate the state of moral, religious political and socio-cultural values of the various cultures of the world.

The eyes of the world are on North Korean Leader Kim Jong Il, seen here, as the scheduled blasting of one of the controversial nuclear reactor in Yongbon closes in (Photo: www.thebathtub.net)

North Korea has invited the media to the scheduled blasting of one of the key parts of its controversial nuclear reactor in Yongbon. On Friday June 26, a vital cooling tower in the said location will be blown up by the communist country to comply as part of its agreement with the United States which seeks to rid the Korean Peninsula of nuclear weapons.

In return, the United States will initiate a loosening of some restrictions imposed on North Korea.

However, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice clarified that North Korea will still have to undergo a 45-day review to see if the communist regime is sincere in doing its part of the deal.

“Before those actions go into effect, we would continue to assess the level of North Korean cooperation in helping to verify the accuracy and completeness of its declaration,” Rice said. “And if that cooperation is insufficient, we will respond accordingly.”

A few months ago, North Korea committed to disable its nuclear reactor, provide a full accounting of its Plutonium acquisitions and cooperate in the verification processes.

North Korea has already given 18,000 vital papers on its nuclear past to the US.

China, along with Russia, South Korea, Japan and the United States, is the host of the six-party talks which seek to put an end to North Korea’s nuclear program.
